Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean<br><br>CLKs' awareness and capacity to draw on relational affordances and learner-internal elements, were important. RIs from TS & ZL for instance, cited their relationship with their local professor as the primary reason for their rational decision to avoid criticism of a strict professor (see examples 2).<br><br>This article reviews all local pragmatic research on Korean published up to 2020. It focuses on practical core topics such as:<br><br>Discourse Construction Tests<br><br>The test for discourse completion (DCT) is an instrument that is widely used in the field of pragmatic research. It has numerous advantages, but also a few disadvantages. For instance it is that the DCT is unable to account for cultural and individual variations in communication. The DCT can also be biased and result in overgeneralizations. Therefore, it is important to analyze it carefully before it is used for research or for assessment purposes.<br><br>Despite its limitations, the DCT is a valuable instrument to study the relationship between prosody, information structure, and non-native speakers. The ability of the DCT in two or more stages to influence social variables that affect politeness can be a strength. This ability can aid researchers study the role of prosody in communication across different cultural contexts, a key issue in cross-cultural pragmatics.<br><br>In the field of linguistics, the DCT is now one of the most significant instruments for analyzing learners' communication behaviors. It can be used to examine various issues such as the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical choices. It can also be used to determine the phonological complexity of learners speaking.<br><br>Recent research utilized the DCT as an instrument to test the skills of refusal among EFL students. Participants were presented with an array of scenarios and required to choose a suitable response from the choices provided. Their decisions were influenced by four factors: their personalities and multilingual identities, their current life experiences as well as their relationships. The RIs were conducted on a one-to-one basis in the space of two days of participants completing the MQs. The RIs, which were recorded and transcribed by two independent coders and then coded. The coding process was iterative by the coders, re-reading and discussing each transcript. The results of coding were contrasted with the original RI transcripts, giving an indication of how the RIs were able to capture the fundamental behavior.<br><br>Interviews with Refusal<br><br>A key question of pragmatic research is why some learners are hesitant to adhere to native-speaker pragmatic norms. Recent research attempted to answer this question with several experimental tools including DCTs MQs and RIs. The participants comprised 46 CLKs, 44 CNSs and 45 KNSs from five Korean universities. Participants were asked to complete the DCTs and MQs either in their L1 or L2 levels. They were then invited to an RI, where they were required to think about and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.<br><br>The results showed that CLKs on average, did not follow the norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did so even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their decision to learner-internal variables such as their identities and personalities as well as multilingual identities. They also mentioned external factors like relational affordances. They described, for example how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and social expectations of their university.<br><br>The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures or consequences they could face in the event that their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their native interlocutors might view them as "foreigners" and think they were ignorant.
