The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored excellently in our tests on floors that were bare and are especially adept in cleaning hair from dogs. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our first choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is its navigation system doesn't feature AI-powered obstacles avoidance. It's therefore prone to getting stuck on shoes and socks and couldn't navigate densely packed rooms very well during our tests. It also doesn't have an image sensor that lets it see the corners of a room.

It's still a good value particularly if your office or home has a lot of bare flooring and you're looking to save money. It's also quiet and operates while you are at work or school. It lacks the edge-to-edge bare floor vacuuming offered in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30. It's also less effective at mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and isn't able to handle dried-on debris. The Q5 is self-emptying cradle however. If you're in need of it, the mopping pad can be changed for an awe-inspiring one in a matter of seconds.

This robot vacuum and mop combination is sleek and has a circular design that looks much like a Roomba model than the boxy models from the competition. It's one of our most appealing looking robot vacuums. The newest model from iRobot is its most advanced model, with features that are cutting-edge like enhanced dirt detection technology and future compatibility with Matter (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads).

It's the only robotic mop or vacuum that scored 100% in our tests, thanks to a combination of high-tech sensors that include cameras, a structured lighting system, and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa and self-cleaning mops.

Like other iRobot models like the X40 is user-friendly, with a simple mobile app interface as well as integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Best Robot Hoover and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a concern in the mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to sleep.

For bigger homes it's recommended to choose one that has zone or spot cleaning modes that allow you to tell the robot vacuum best to clean a particular area of your home by using the app or voice controls.
