Ms Barton was 14 when she left school without a GCSE, and was thrown into depression and an alcoholism pit. She spent two years drinking every day, was unable to sleep and suffered nightmares of being burned alive in the flames. Ms Barton was able to overcome her struggles and regain control of her life, and regain confidence and drive.

She was inspired by her mother, who suffered from a number of mental health issues. Ms. Barton wanted to study medicine, but she needed an excellent set of GCSEs which is why she opted for an Access to Medicine course and studied at home, with the assistance of online tutors. After finishing the course, she applied to universities, but was not accepted.

Ms. Barton ended up working as a Clinical Psychologist with GMW NHS Foundation Trust. She has worked with a variety of people, from young children to older adults and elderly. She has also been a participant in the Hearing Voices Network. She has extensive experience helping those with mental health issues, and is committed to continuing education in therapy and psychology.

Mary Dinsmore Salter Ainsworth was born in Glendale, Ohio, in 1913. Her father was employed by a large manufacturing company and the family relocated to Toronto when she was just five years old. She attended the University of Toronto, where she studied psychology. She was an assistant researcher to psychologist William Blatz. She worked on a team that created psychological testing scales associated with Blatz's security theory. In 1946, she returned to teaching. In 1950, she was married to Leonard Ainsworth, a fellow graduate student, and relocated to London to assist him in completing his degree at University College, London.

Ainsworth and Bowlby, while working at the Tavistock clinic they continued their research on attachment, examining the impact of interfering with the mother-child bond on the development of children. Their findings showed that when the bond is broken, it can lead to emotional and developmental problems.

Ainsworth's research was influenced by the study of ethics, or the behavior and interaction of animals in their natural environment. It challenged the accepted mental belief that the mother-infant bond was solely dependent on infants' basic requirements. She was also intrigued by the work of Harry Harlow a University of Wisconsin researcher psychologist who conducted an controversial experiment with infant monkeys. His findings that the monkeys preferred snuggling with a fake "surrogate mother" with a cold, wrapped in wire "mother" without food, challenged the notion that a bond between a parent and an infant is dependent on fulfilling biological needs.

Ainsworth worked tirelessly on her research throughout her life. In 1998, she was awarded the American Psychological Association Mentor Award for Developmental Psychology as well as the Gold Medal of Life Achievement.
