They attributed their choice to learner-internal variables such as their personality and multilingual identities. They also spoke of external factors, such as relationships and affordances. They described, for example, how their interactions with their professors helped them to perform more comfortably in terms of the linguistic and cultural standards of their university.
The interviewees expressed concerns about the social pressures and penalties they could face if their local social norms were violated. They were concerned that their local friends might consider them "foreigners" and think they are not intelligent. This concern was similar in nature to the one expressed by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).
These results suggest that native-speaker pragmatic norms are not the preferred choice of Korean learners. They could remain useful as a model for official Korean proficiency tests. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reconsider their relevance in specific scenarios and in various contexts. This will help them better understand how different cultural environments may impact the pragmatic behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond.
